The African Development Bank makes gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls central to its activities by developing and implementing strategies on the need to integrate women's concerns into the Bank's internal and external operations and commitments.

Lack of data has often proven to be a handicap for preparing an analytically robust case for promoting gender equality among policy makers and program managers. Gender mainstreaming is constrained by the lack of ready access to data that is necessary to inform strategies and measure impact. Experts are also constrained by limited access to reliable data and information on gender which are pertinent to sector operations.

The Gender Data Portal was conceived as a platform to access data on gender indicators in user friendly formats and gain insights into the relationships of gender variables with their determinants and associations with health, economy and development. The project is funded by a grant by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

The Gender Data Portal consolidates data on key gender indicators from diverse sources such as national surveys and provides an interactive forum to users to exchange experiences on challenges, achievements and lessons learned in collecting and using gender data. The portal currently provides data on 65 gender indicators for all African countries and displays associations between key gender variables and outcomes. The Gender Data Portal can be a useful tool for policy makers and practitioners working on gender issues across Africa and the world.
